Arlo Guthrie was born with a guitar in one hand and a harmonica in the other, in Coney Island, Brooklyn, New York in 1947. He is the eldest son of America's most beloved singer/writer/philosopher Woody Guthrie and Marjorie Mazia Guthrie, a professional dancer with the Martha Graham Company and founder of The Committee to Combat Huntington's Disease. He grew up surrounded by dancers and musicians: Pete Seeger, Ronnie Gilbert, Fred Hellerman and Lee Hays (The Weavers), Leadbelly, Cisco Houston, Ramblin' Jack Elliott, Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee, all of whom were significant influences on Arlo's musical career. Guthrie gave his first public performance in 1961 at age 13 and quickly became involved in the music that was shaping the world.

The Dundalk-born violinist Zoë Conway has managed the rare feat of mastering many styles of playing. Classically trained, she started by winning prizes in both the classical feiseanna and the all-Ireland traditional competitions. Her repertoire can range from mainstream jazz through Appalachian and bluegrass styles. She’s also toured with ‘Riverdance’ and performed with the National Symphony and Irish Chamber orchestras. Zoë’s recent CD ‘ The Horse’s Tail’ has earned massive critical acclaim with The Irish Times dubbing her, quite simply, ‘a genius’. Zoe will be joined by the masterful John McIntyre on guitar.

Francois le Roux, a.k.a. the HA!Man, enchants and astonishes audiences the world over with his cello, original electronic accompaniments, keyboard, voice and dances. His music reflects his Southern African roots and his spontaneous approach challenges conventional ideas in both the serious and commercial music environment. He coined the term HA! to express the spirited way in which he conducts his performances. Each HA!Man show unfolds differently, as le Roux intuitively picks from a pool of accompaniments to improvise to. As the performance is infused with direct creativity, it is rather difficult to give a clear idea of what it holds for audiences. Yet, repeated standing ovations tell a story of a unique experience that is able to speak to broad spectrum of music lovers and lay people alike. His life story often becomes part of the show. Having been brought up in Apartheid South Africa, his own worldview changed dramatically as the eighties drew to a close. He developed a new philosophy of artistic expression, spirituality and human relations that he calls “three dimensionality.” In this the spirit of Africa played a major part, which is strongly reflected much of his music. This is his first show in Ireland, north or south. It will be one of the most fascinating shows you will see this year.

 

Dr Sketchy - the art class that thinks it’s a cabaret – is about to reveal to the world (OK, the Black Box patrons) what several hours of drinking while drawing can generate. And given that the Dr Sketchy burlesque models pose for only ten minutes at a time, each sketch has to be created very quickly. Despite this, some incredible ark work is produced. This exhibition of random selections of art work from the Dr Sketchy regulars will be showcased during June, with the launch party on June 3rd And yes, they will be for sale ...

He grew up in a white Catholic family on the Falls Road, all the time believing he was adopted. Tim was actually the result of an extra-marital affair between his mum, Peggy, and a black junior doctor from West Africa. To avoid scandal, Peggy told her family the baby was stillborn. Tim was then hidden in a baby home for almost a year before his mum ‘adopted’ him. Tim learned the remarkable truth of his mother’s true identity when his mum revealed the shocking truth on the day of the Live Aid concert in 1985. Where Are You Really From? is a moving account of racial prejudice, sectarian tensions and family secrets. It also recounts his exceptional relationship with his mother and his attempts to trace the father who abandoned him.

 

Hope Sandoval is an American singer-songwriter who is the lead singer for Mazzy Star and Hope Sandoval & the Warm Inventions. During live performances, Sandoval prefers to sing in near darkness with only a dim backlight, playing the tambourine, harmonica, glockenspiel or shaker. Sandoval plays the Black Box on Thursday 6th May as part of the 11th Cathedral Arts Quarter Festival.

It shows the Death Penalty in its true light - a barbaric, racist, politically motivated act of revenge that doesn’t achieve any of its so called aims, including deterring violent crime. And it’s just plain stupid."

UK guitar legend John Etheridge rightly enjoys a glowing reputation throughout the jazz world and beyond. Described by Time Out as, “…a virtuoso on acoustic and electric guitars” his range is well illustrated by his numerous collaborations, including the many years he spent touring and recording with iconic French violinist Stéphane Grappelli. Sweet Chorus was formed by Etheridge as a personal tribute to Grappelli, who was his erstwhile mentor and bandleader. This show will include material by Grappelli, alongside originals and some famous tunes from the Hot Club repertoire. Sweet Chorus features the outstanding violinist Chris Garrick and the rock solid rhythm of Dave Kelbie (guitar) and Andy Crowdy (bass).

 

The Dodge Brothers are renowned for playing the hell out of classic Americana. Singing songs about transport, heartbreak and homicide, they render distinctive narratives of mean women, bad men and railroads and set them to hard driving rhythms. One Mark Kermode thumps the double bass and blows a lonesome harmonica. Joining our favourite film critic with howling guitar and plaintive banjo is Mike Hammond alongside the ringing guitar and mandolin of Aly Hirji.They’re backed up by percussion on a shoe-string from Al Hammond. This roughneck quartet make a mighty roar and have got feet stomping and hands clapping from California through the Natchez Trace to the South coast of the UK. Skiffletastic.
